Easy Ideas for Building Fluency in Literacy

Did you know that fluency is a key element of building literacy in preschoolers? Imagine I gave you a stack of alphabet cards. I'm sure you could easily name each letter. This is fluency.

You can help young children build their fluency without using letters though. Here are some other ideas:
  • collect a stack of silverware (fork, spoon). Lay them out in a line. Ask the child to tell you what type of silverware is on the table. (fork, spoon, spoon, fork)
  • Cut up different shapes (circle, square, triangle). Play the same naming game.
  • Before snack time, try this exercise with common treats (carrots, peas, cracker)
